On Tuesday we journeyed north to the city of Boston. At Faneuil Hall, fifth graders learned all about town meetings during Revolutionary times. They were surprised to learn all the criteria to vote in town meetings. Students assumed one had to be a white male to have a vote, but they heard otherwise. Ask your child if he or she can tell you the five criteria! Only 10% of the population was eligible.
Next we walked to the Old South Meeting House where students role-played and re-enacted the tea tax debate. They belted out their lines with passion. Samuel Adams would have been proud! After the debate students were curious to look at the exhibits, specifically a model of the city; everyone wanted to find the home of the important perions he or she had researched!
Lunch at Milk Street Cafe was lovely. We noted how unusual it would be to have a mezzuzah on the door of a restaurant in America and to dine with so many other men wearing kippot.
Fifth graders were exceptionally well behaved on this trip.
